The basics

Fursuits range from simple partial costumes (just a head, hands, and tail) to elaborate full-body suits with moving mouths, custom eyes, and built-in cooling fans. Most are built to match a specific fursona. They take weeks or months to make and can cost anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand dollars, depending on complexity.

Who makes them?

Some fursuiters build their own - sewing, sculpting foam, and airbrushing fur fabric. Others commission them from specialist makers, some of whom have years-long waiting lists. Fursuit making is a genuine craft skill with its own techniques, tutorials, and community.

Do I need one?

Not at all. Most furries don't have a fursuit - they're expensive, time-consuming to make, and warm to wear. They're a beloved part of the fandom's culture, but they're absolutely not a requirement. You'll see plenty of people in regular clothes at any furry event, including ours.
